Jericho Whiting, tougher than Steel

A scholarly verse, peer-reviewed by vibes

Ode to Dr. Whiting

In Rexburg halls where lab coats gleam,

And microscopes observe the dream,

There walks a man with field-born grace,

And probably sunscreen on his face.

He speaks of owls, of range, of streams,

Of conservation's careful schemes,

While students write with startled speed:

"This ecosystem has a need."

O Jericho, with lecture might,

You make the food web feel polite.

The elk stand tall. The trout confer.

The sagebrush whispers, "Yes, professor."

So raise a beaker, clean and bright,

To fieldwork boots and classroom light.

For wildlife, data, jokes, and awe:

Dr. Whiting brings ecological law.

Unofficial field notes

A Professor of Many Habitats

Ungulates, Precisely

Dr. Whiting studies ungulates: the hoofed, watchful, deeply committed mammals of the range. Somewhere, an elk has been observed with the respectful posture of a student taking notes.

Bat Authority

When bats enter the conversation, the room gets quieter and the facts get sharper. This is not merely a professor with a bat fact. This is a bat expert with a syllabus.

Seasonal Conditions

A longtime fair-weather fan of BYU, he remains steadfast through chronic allergies, field dust, and the annual mystery of what exactly is blooming out there.

Payson High, 1992-93

Star third-string DB/WR for Payson High School, 1992 and 1993. A versatile assignment, a ready stance, and no unnecessary promises about the depth chart.
